When Community Shows Up

There’s something special about seeing work printed. It’s tangible. It slows us down and allows us to enjoy the work a bit longer.

I documented the PANCIT and MigranteBC mural painting tent at the 2025 Pinoy Festival at the Swangard Stadium in Burnaby in the summer. Tito Bert shared the work he does at PANCIT (Philippine Artists Network for Community Integrative Transformation) helping those with trauma heal through art and painting.

When I arrived, I was a stranger, but by the end of my coverage, I felt like family. The warm hearts of the community welcomed me in to their space and I had such a nice time getting to know everyone.

Thank you PANCIT, MigranteBC and Vancouver Foundation - and thank you for inviting me up to be a part of this painting as well.

It was really special to be invited up to participate in this mural. Thank you PANCIT and MigranteBC. Something about having the brush on the canvas ignited a spark in me and reminded me how much I enjoy fine art.

Focusing on What Matters Most

This year I had a second article in the VF magazine which brought me out to document another story. Whenever assignments like this come up, the rough story is shared with me and I get excited about what sort of elements would really guide it along.

In conversation between our designer and donor, a few elements came up, one being this 120-year-old ash tree pictured below. Geoff shared stories about his childhood, his family, his mom and little vignettes would pop up in my head. As we chatted, the sun set slowly beside the tree and the minute the light provided this nice warm glow on the side, we got the photo. Geoff brought out a lovely portrait of his parents, and we had it placed in her little lookout hut.

Thank you Geoff and Vancouver Foundation for having me come document this story.
